Protocols and Rituals

Protocol is an integral part of our routine because it helps to teach our children self-respect and respect for others. All adults are referred to as Mama (females) or Baba (males) followed by either their first or last name. Adults are greeted by saying "shikamoo" and respond by saying "marahaba". These are Swahili greetings for elders.

Rituals are also a part of our routine. Rituals are useful because they assist both adults and children in developing discipline and collective commitment. Rituals also instill harmony within ourselves and among others. MALI YETU rituals include the following morning pledge:

As a strong African child, I pledge to be positive and respectful to my parents and teachers, love my brothers and sisters, be happy and free in my work, and be healthy and clean in my body and mind.
