The 2010 program will run from June 21 to July 30, 2010. The theme will be "Our African Heritage” and will focus on the traditional and contemporary heritage of Africa. This year we will have the regular program (4 weeks) as well an international trip (2 weeks). For our international trip we will visit Senegal and The Gambia. While in Senegal we will learn about Senegalese culture and our students will meet with Senegalese students at a local school. We will also travel to Goree Island and visit the slave castle as well as other historical sites in Senegal. While in The Gambia students will also travel to the ancestral village of Alex Haley. For those who choose to participate in the international trip, the fees include international airfare, local transportation, hotel accommodations, and all meals.
Students may still participate in the four week program without participating in the international trip. In accordance with this year's theme, all students will learn about the cultures and traditions of Africa. Students will learn Wolof, the language spoken in Senegal and The Gambia. Students will also gain a basic understanding of both traditional and contemporary Africa and Africa's connection with people of African descent in America.

The leadership program will be offered again this year and will be limited to six students aged 13 or over with at least one year experience with Mali Yetu. Selection will again be based on merit. Each candidate must submit a two-page essay describing the positive qualities they can contribute to the Leadership Program. Deadline for returning the enclosed essay form is January 31, 2010. In February each applicant will be interviewed by a panel of community elders selected by the parents. Those selected by the elders will become candidates and eligible to attend the 2010 Mali Yetu Leadership Institute. They will become Mali Yetu leaders upon successful completion of the Leadership Institute. The directors for the Leadership Institute will be Mama Michele Rudolph and Mama Tanya Allen.
