Programs

The main focus of Mali Yetu is our summer session, which includes courses in a variety of topics, local field trips in the Cleveland area, and a yearly trip out of town. Mali Yetu also has a leadership program, which is open to any child who is between 13 and 15 years or age and who has participated in Mali Yetu for at least one year. This program is competitive and involves a three month training with the Mali Yetu Leadership Academy. These students take special classes during the summer program and are given limited responsibilities with the other students. Upon entering college, former Mali Yetu leaders are eligible to receive a Mali Yetu scholarship.

Mali Yetu is also engaged in activities throughout the year. We hold a Kwanzaa celebration on the second day of Kwanzaa every year. This event is free and open to the public. Mali Yetu also hosts a variety of community activities such as plays, dinners, and jazz concerts. Each June we also host a Juneteenth celebration that is free and open to the public.

We also participate as guest speakers for various local and national functions. It is through these various activities that we are able to raise funds and awareness for our program, thus ensuring its survival.

We believe that our focus on educating our children about their history and themselves complements the traditional education they receive in their schools. Educating our children also lays a strong foundation for our students as they encounter ignorance and dismissals of the contributions of peoples of African descent, both in and outside the classroom. The kind of curriculum that Mali Yetu provides is as needed now and when we first began the program, and our parents, members, teachers, and chaperons continue to be committed to the education of our children.
